In 2017-2018, I worked with Health Development Initiative, a non-profit organization based in Kigali striving to improve both the quality and accessibility of healthcare for all Rwandans through advocacy, education and training. A core focus of the organization is providing education and access to reproductive health information and services. In Rwanda, reproductive health is a key focus area for the government. Rwanda has the highest population density in all of Africa and 67% of the population are under 20 years old.[1] The total fertility rate in Rwanda is also one of the highest in sub-Saharan Africa at 4.6 children per woman in 2010.[2] HDI is working hard to address these issues through advocacy and education, with a particular focus on serving marginalized groups like LGBTQ communities and ethnic minorities.
As HDI’s Communications Manager, I strengthened their communications strategy, developed a social media plan, and published core communications materials with a focus on reproductive health. My work resulted in a 60% increase in social media followers and engagement, providing invaluable information on reproductive health and rights to a larger audience.
