The Compass Center is a nonprofit organization in North Carolina serving survivors of domestic violence. As part of their comprehensive approach to domestic abuse, the center implements an evidence-based HIV prevention curriculum called Making Proud Choices.

As a co-facilitator of Making Proud Choices, I help provide over 600 students per year with comprehensive sexual health information, specifically on HIV prevention, condom use, negotiation skills, STIs, and contraceptive options. After going through our 2-week program in public schools, 72% of youth demonstrated an increase in knowledge that supports the prevention of pregnancy and STIs. A favorite activity for the 9th grade students is doing the condom demonstration, which is the first time many students learn how to correctly use condoms.
